Week 16 Standout Viz – Build a Likert Scale

What is Likert Scale?

A Likert Scale chart is a visualization commonly used to display survey responses along an ordered scale. It helps us see not only the direction of sentiment (positive or negative) but also the strength of that sentiment. You’ll often see Likert charts in feedback forms, employee surveys, market research, and opinion polls, as they clearly communicate how groups of people feel about a topic.

For example, responses may range from “Strongly disagree” to “Strongly agree” or, in this case, “Hate it” to “Love it.”

For Week 16, the dataset comes from a YouGov US survey where 1,019 adults were asked:
“How do you feel about doing the following activities in the summer?”

The Dataset includes:

  • Activity: The specific summertime activity being rated.

  • Feeling Response: The sentiment level (Love it, Like it, Not sure, Dislike it, Hate it).

  • Percentage: The proportion of respondents who selected each sentiment.

Why it Stands Out:

  • Balanced Layout: The activities are neatly ordered from most-loved to least-loved, making it easy to follow the story.

  • Color Choice: Using calm blues for positive responses and yellow for negative ones creates contrast while keeping the design pleasant to read.

  • Clear Storytelling: With just a glance, we see that ice cream and vacations are crowd favorites, while indoor sports and sunbathing rank low.

  • Attention to Detail: Labels like “% Negative vs. % Positive” and the survey context make the viz accessible even for a first-time viewer.

  • Unique Style: The layout and color choices bring a polished, professional feel, giving the visualization a unique style.
